Steps of a Full Flute Overhaul – The New England Flute Shop
May 2009

Mechanical problems, or bent mechanisms are repaired. (Remarkable damage may require a surcharge arranged with the customer in advance.)

Soldered toneholes are checked for leaks.

Flute Mechanism is refit (swedged) to tolerances of less than .001 (one, one thousandths) of an inch.  This repairs the "side play" of keys on the hinge rod resulting from silver wearing away.

The keys and tubes are washed, and sanitized, tarnish is removed.  All flute tubes and keys are hand polished to remove deep scratches and tarnish. (No machine polishing of any kind is done on a New England Flute Shop overhaul.)

The pad retaining rings and springs are replaced.  The toneholes are leveled.

The mechanism is completely taken apart, and the hinge rods, and hinge tubes (inside and out) are cleaned and polished to a high sheen.

All silencers and regulation shims are replaced with felt silencers, leather and cork as dictated by individual keys.

All pads are replaced using only the highest quality treated, double skin bladder pad or Straubinger Pads. Keys are vented properly. Shimming to tolerances of less than .001 of an inch is the standard.

All accessible dents are removed.   A new headjoint cork is installed.

The embouchure hole is cleaned and polished.  Tenon fit is checked and adjusted if needed.

The flute is play tested, and checked for exceptional tone, resonance, response, pitch, and evenness throughout the registers.

Your flute will look like new and play better than when it was new.  We guarantee it !
